The three numbers that explain 2026
First: AI answer boxes crush click-through rates. SISTRIX measured German Google results: roughly 20 percent of all keywords now trigger at least one generative answer element, and where such a box appears, the click rate on the first organic result falls from 27 to 11 percent — a drop of almost 60 percent, adding up to an estimated 265 million lost clicks per month in Germany alone.1
Second: zero-click is the norm. SparkToro’s landmark study found that of every 1,000 Google searches in the EU, only 374 clicks reach the open web — the rest end on Google’s own properties or with no click at all.2
Third: AI adoption is compounding. National statistics offices report business AI usage jumping year over year — in Austria, for instance, from 20 to 30 percent of companies within a single year.3 Tools that used to belong to corporations are now available to every one-person shop.
What this does NOT mean
The wrong conclusion would be: “so websites are pointless now.” The opposite is true. AI boxes mostly absorb informational searches — definitions, how-tos, knowledge questions: the business model of content portals. Someone looking for a plumber, a restaurant or a studio nearby doesn’t want a text box; they want an actual business — address, photos, reviews, contact. Those searches still produce clicks. They just flow to the businesses whose presence convinces.
So 2026 doesn’t sharpen the question “website: yes or no”. It sharpens the selection: mediocre presences lose faster than ever, convincing ones absorb what they lose.
The four things worth your time
- 1. Own your home base. Platforms change rules, reach and fees overnight — your website and your own customer list (email, WhatsApp) are the only channels nobody can take away. Everything else is rented ground.
- 2. Local beats global. For a business with a catchment area, being findable in the neighbourhood is worth a thousand times more than theoretical reach. Complete, current business data, real photos and well-kept reviews decide local searches — the segment AI boxes touch least.
- 3. Answers beat buzzwords. Whether a human or an AI system reads your site: clear, concrete, honest information wins. Describe services, process and region precisely and AI answers will cite you; boilerplate (“your competent partner for…”) gets skipped.
- 4. Fewer channels, done properly. A small business doesn’t need five platforms. One fast website, one well-kept profile on the platform that matters in your trade, and one reliable response channel beat five abandoned accounts.
What about paid ads?
Paid ads can work locally — but they are rent, not investment: visibility ends with the budget. The sensible order remains: build the foundation first (website, business data, reviews), then put targeted ads on top once that foundation can turn visitors into inquiries. Running ads onto a broken foundation means paying for visitors who leave.
The takeaway
2026 rewards substance. The businesses winning right now have no secret tricks — they have a website that loads fast, informs concretely and makes contact a one-tap action; business data that is correct everywhere; and reviews that speak for them. That is no longer a budget question. It is an execution question.
